Wilts and Berks Canal February 2006
February saw us back on the Wilts and Berks Canal at 7 Locks near Lyneham just west of Wootton Basset.
We last visited in December 05 for the combined KESCRG/LWRG Xmas party (click to see the dig report) when a trees were felled and stumps pulled.
The weather was very kind to us this weekend which allowed much construction work on lock 3.
The first task of the day was to fill the holes in the block work with concrete before backfilling the previously laid bricks - a fair old job when mixing by hand!
Always amazes me how concrete mixes better when stared at by 4 blokes...
The end result including a few more courses on the brickwork of the offside lower gate recess.
Sunday saw further brick laying along with the block work being brought up to final level on the nearside gate recess while else where we thumped fence posts in.
The offside of lock 4 laying out the line of the temporary dump site in an adjacent field for the spoil of the lock side as it is taken down.
'Blue' in the distance grubbing tree roots out of the off side of lock 4, compare this to a photo I took looking up the cut to lock 4 in early November 05.
A very satisfying weekend even if it did break on or two of us but the work is far from done, here are a couple of photos to try and demonstrate just how shafted the offside of lock 4 is and why the lock wall needs to be taken down to water level before being rebuilt:
Finally I need to thank WRG for the loan of SAD while I have had my Disco in bits trying to stop the rot, guess which one is which!
