Wendover Arm - Grand Union Canal

(Pictures by Kate Penn & Mick Lilliman)

KESCRG last worked at the Whitehouses Pumping Station site
in May 2010 when we began the excavation of the Pumping Station.
The photo above shows the archways that link the pumping station to the canal.

First of all Bobby got to work clearing the site of nettles and other scrub.

Then we armed ourselves with shovels and barrows and set to expose
the rest of the Pumping Station arches. We also removed
some concrete slabs so more soil can be cleared.

After many hours of digging by hand we decided that
 some mechanical help was required!

By the end of the weekend all three archways were exposed and ready for
inspection by a British Waterways Heritage Officer. This meeting will
enable plans to be made for the restoration of the Pumping Station Wharf.

We were all rewarded for our hard work with a delicious meal prepared by Eli - highlight was her summery dessert of shortbread, cream and strawberries!
